Research: The Importance of Opening Titles

In a movie or program the opening titles consist of the most important people included in the motion picture. Usually, the most important people are at the beginning of the titles. the titles credit the people involved in the film and also present the film title. In my opinion, the opening titles enable the audience to see what genre of movie they are going to watching through the use of different fonts and occasionally, the titles can also contain a back story that goes along with the plot in the main movie, giving the audience context.

There are many conventions within opening titles. For example, the start of the titles usually start with the distribution company/studio, they could of possibly paid for the production. The MGM Lion is a prime example of a distribution company.

Another convention in opening titles is the "association with..", the production have multiple production companies that played a part in the making of the movie. They are usually after the distributor and the primary production company/studio.

In addition, the director's name film appears, the audience recognizes the directors name. Directors have different styles therefore the audience would be able to tell who has directed the film just by the style.

The title of the film is also included in the opening titles as well as the main cast who will be starring in the production. Some of the supporting cast may be present as well,. however they will be on the screen together and sharing air time, typically these will be the character who will be killed first before the main characters. The producers and the executive producers would be near the front of the titles, also the casting director will be included. If the plot is based on a story or novel, at the start of the titles credit is given to the author.
