Sound is key in movies, especially in the horror genre, it conveys emotions and builds up the suspense to get the audience of the edge of their seats. Screeching, screaming and shouting noises can be featured in the music to imitate the victims, this heightens the terror of the viewer. Typically, horror films tend to suddenly change pitch which may shock and scare the viewer.
Some movies have become iconic for their music and soundtracks, a example of this is "Jaws" or "Psycho" have became recognisable just from the music used in the film.
The music builds up the tension as the shark is about to attack, this enables the viewer to guess what happens. Music aids and contributes to the fear as suspense is built, emotions of fear are evoked. Depending on the type of movies, whether is is based on paranormal activity, monsters or sharks, different types of movies can be used.
In the case of a film being based on paranormal activity including possession and demons, this music could be used. This music could be used in the opening 2 minutes of the film to set the scene and aim to already have the audience creeped out due to the eerie feeling it conveys. Sinister voices can be included which creates the idea of being haunted, the sound of old jewellery boxes are also used as the high pitched sounds can become demonic.
